THE ISOLATION OF RETINAL FROM THE BOVINE CORPUS LUTEUM

Popis: Retinal, the aldehyde of vitamin A, has been found in the ovaries of cod by Plack & Woodhead (1961) and in the ovaries of an invertebrate and several submammalian vertebrates by Plack & Kon (1961). Plack (1964) isolated retinal from the eggs of several vertebrates and correlated the onset of egglaying in hens with an increase in blood retinal. A search of the literature did not reveal the isolation of retinal from any mammalian ovary. Since vitamin A has been shown necessary for efficient steroid hormone production (Gloor & Wiss, 1959; Juneja, Murthy & Ganguly, 1966), and since provitamins A are in such high concentration in the corpus luteum (Netter, 1932), we decided to look for vitamin A derivatives in this tissue. Eight corpora lutea (total wt, 34-6 g) were dissected from the ovaries of freshly slaughtered cows. Lipids were extracted exhaustively with acetone.
