Popis: A multipurpose Co60 γ-irradiation facility has been developed and used at the Puerto Rico Nuclear Center that has applications in biological, chemical and solid-state physics research. The facility uses water as a shield so that direct visual observations of the source and mechanisms involved in irradiation procedures can be made. The source can be arranged in several geometries providing a dose-rate range of 3500–1,500,000 r/hr and providing a field up to 18 in. in diameter. Temperature control as well as control of the gaseous environment of the sample during irradiation is possible with different sample holders. Materials which have been irradiated include: seeds, bacterial cultures, small animals, maize tassels, bananas, chick embryos, insects, organic crystals, chemical solutions and vegetative cuttings of plants.
