Popis: | A critical figure in facilitating the entry of the Soviet Union into the InternationalAssociation of Athletic Federations (IAAF) that has been not been sufficientlyexamined is Lord David Cecil, the 6th Marquess of Exeter (hereafter referredto as David Burghley). Based on underexamined archival material from theIAAF Archive in Monaco, we argue that as the leader of the largest sportsfederation within the Olympic Movement, Burghley was in a position to exertinfluence on the Soviet Union’s entry into the organisation in the immediatepost-war period. We display that during and after a visit to Moscow in July of1947, Burghley formed friendships with leading Soviet athletics officials, including Alexander Novikov, the head of the All-Union Committee of PhysicalCulture and Sport in the Soviet Union. This trip informed Burghley’s attitudetowards the Soviets decisively and played an important role in ushering theSoviets into the organisation. |
