Previous studies have shown that if given the opportunity, people will cheat under competitive settings to earn economic rewards. Moreover, people's cheating behavior may be driven by: i) desire in achieving reward; ii) difficulty in achieving reward iii) belief about opponents' behavior iv) social comparison motive. The present study aims to further investigate how people's cheating behavior vary across ingroup and outgroup competition against higher- or lower- ranked opponents. In short, we hope to study whether deception in competition is affected by opponent's rank and ingroup favoritism. The current study adopts a novel time-limited math task to measure deceptive behavior. To study the research question, we use a comparative payment scheme and manipulate the identity (i.e. rank and membership) of each participant's opponent. |
