Popis: Histoplasma capsulatum cells were identified in the choroid of a patient who died with the disseminated form of the disease. The fungus was cultured from the retina and choroid and identified by light and electron microscopy within the cytoplasm of macrophages in the choroid. These were the only cells in which the fungus could be found. Histoplasma capsulatum cells were not seen histologically in the retina or other ocular tissues, and the positive cultures obtained from the retina in this case were thought to be due to contamination. The duration of the disease and the poor immunologic and hematologic state of the patient probably prevented the formation of choroidal granulomas.
