Popis: | Twenty-two primary liver-cell tumours were encountered in a series of 24,169 slaughterhouse cattle in Ceylon, an incidence of 0·9 per 1,000. All animals with the neoplasm were native cattle (Bos indicus var. Ceylonicus). The tumours, which were much more common in females, were restricted to the right hepatic lobe. They were present as a solitary lesion in 19 livers, and as multiple tumours in the remainder. They were encapsulated and divided into lobules by interlobular septa, and had a characteristic variegated colour. The tumour cells were arranged into one of three predominant patterns, viz. cords, trabeculae or acini. Intranuclear inclusions were present in 13 of the 22 tumours, and their structure and staining properties indicated an origin by cytoplasmic invagination of the nuclear membrane; their cause and significance remain obscure. The neoplasms appeared to arise from hyperplastic foci of liver cells and appeared occasionally to be of multicentric origin. |
