Popis: | The changes in the number of circulating platelets and in the carbon clearance rates of rabbits given colloidal carbon alone or at various times after a tubercle bacillary lipid or endotoxin were studied. The results provide further evidence of the importance of platelet numbers and function in the control of carbon clearance rates in normal and experimental circumstances. Soon after the tubercle lipid or the endotoxin injections the number of circulating platelets fell to low levels and carbon clearance rates were slow. The number of circulating platelets then recovered to approximately half of resting levels at 4 hrs after either the lipid or the endotoxin and the carbon clearance rates became elevated. The clearance rates now showed biphasic characteristics which have previously been shown to be associated with increased attachment of carbon particles to platelets as well as macrophages. |
