Popis: Two main antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity systems play a prominent role as effector mechanisms in immunity to Schistosoma mansoni in human as well as in experimental infections. IgG-dependent eosinophil-mediated cytotoxicity involves mast cells as accessory cells and efficiently kills schistosomula at the early stage of immunity. At this period, IgG 2a antibody to schistosome, mostly bound to circulating parasite antigen is detected in the serum parallel to eosinophil-mediated killing. A second and more persistent stage of immunity involves macrophages as effector cells triggered to kill the parasite by IgE antibody complexed with schistosome antigen. Measurement of specific IgE antibodies or complexes provides a convenient test to investigate immunity owing to the close correlation between the presence of such antibody isotype, macrophage cytotoxicity and protective immunity.
