Popis: | in activities of some enzymes, occurs in tocopherol deficiency. High levels of dietary unsaturated fatty acids hasten the onset of deficiency symptoms. Experimental muscular dystrophy in rabbits and chicks, induced by tocopherol deficiency, results in increased activity of the lysosomal enzyme, f3-glucuronidase, in the muscle and liver (2, 3). Tappel (4) suggested that thisincreasewas due to increased fragilityof the lysosomes. However, the opposite effect has been observed in the liver and other organs of rats (5). These species differences in /3-glucuronidase activity of tocopherol-deficient animals have not been explained. This study attempts to determine: a) the effect of peroxidized linoleic acid on the total /3-glucuronidase activity of normal rat liver preparation, and the influence of added a-tocopherol; b) the effect of a-tocopherol on the /3-glucuronidase activity in the liver of normal and tocopherol-deficient rats; and c) the effect of peroxidized linoleic acid in the presence of a-tocopherol, both added in vitro, on the /3-glucuronidase activity of liver preparationof normal and tocopherol-deficient rats. |
