Popis: | Prior research has found that older respondents are more often assessed by interviewers as having problems with understanding survey questions, which has been attributed to older respondents’ lower cognitive performance resulting in lower quality responses. These analyses have ignored the characteristics and active role of the interviewer. Drawing from sociopsychological research on age-related stereotypes and inter-generational communication, we hypothesize that ages of the respondent and the interviewer together shape the interviewer’s perception of the respondent’s performance. Our analyses of the European Social Survey Round 8 show that the negative effect of respondents’ age on the assessment of understanding survey questions is greater if interviewers are younger than if they are older, net of respondents’ cognitive functioning and undesirable response styles. |
