Active flow control on low aspect ratio wings at a Reynolds number of 20 000 was experimentally studied and the results are presented here. The dielectric barrier discharge type plasma actuator that was utilized in this study was found to be an effective means of studying several actuator locations and configurations, without any major modifications to the wind tunnel models. The actuators were driven in burst mode, leading to a periodic excitation. The study is focused on rectangular planform shapes of varying aspect ratios. Both leading edge and wing tip actuator locations were investigated and the driving forcing parameters were optimised in order to obtain a maximum increase in lift. A bluff body aerodynamics inspired frequency scaling was found to be more suitable for comparing the results of different studies. |
