Popis: | A retropharyngeal mass is an unusual but potentially lethal cause of respiratory distress in neonates. Because of the large number of vital structures bordering the retropharyngeal space, surgery in this area is extremely difficult, especially in young infants. Therefore, procedures that define precise anatomic boundaries, make a precise preoperative histologic diagnosis, and relieve mass effect are of great value to the patient. We describe the sonographically guided percutaneous aspiration of retropharyngeal masses in two neonates. In one the aspiration provided anatomic localization and histologic diagnosis. In the other, in addition to yielding diagnostic information, repeated aspirations were also used for palliation until other medical problems could be controlled. |
