The observation of subthreshold production of K/sup -/ in the reaction /sup 28/Si+/sup 28/Si at 2.1 GeV/nucleon is reported. For production at O/sup 0/ and 1 GeV/c, a K/sup -/ cross section (d/sup 2/sigma/dp d..cap omega..) of 1.6 mb sr/sup -1/ (GeV/c)/sup -1/ and an upper limit for p-bar production of 3 nb sr/sup -1/ (GeV/c)/sup -1/ were measured. Calculations incorporating the effects of nuclear Fermi momentum underpredict the K/sup -/ yield by more than a factor of 20. Production mechanisms involving collective effects and equilibration are discussed. |
