Popis: | Cotton production worldwide has been often criticised for excessive use of pesticides, especially insecticides. Consumption of insecticides (in value) from 1998 to 2008 in cotton crops has, however, only increased by 7% compared to 50% in all other crops. Furthermore, many papers recently reported significant reduction of insecticide use in cotton crops worldwide. This has been mainly due to the wide-scale adoption of insect-resistant genetically modified cotton cultivars especially in the USA, China and India. Elsewhere the implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programmes and Insect Resistance Management (IRM) strategies has influenced pesticide use. In West African countries, millions of small-scale farmers rely on the cotton sub-sector for their livelihoods, but there is a lack of published data on the extent of insecticide use in cotton cultivation. Farming practices have been traditionally characterized by low use of insecticides in cotton. However, resistance to pyrethroids in Helicoverpa armigera has been reported and advances in insect pest management have led to significantly improved insecticide use. This note provides up-to-date information on the recent development of cotton pest management programmes and insecticide use in Mali from 1997 to 2008 where insect-resistant genetically modified cotton cultivars have not yet been released.
