Accumulating data indicate that kidney tonifying recipe to treat depression patients may significantly reduce clinical symptoms, effectively improve the quality and prognosis of the patient's life. Clinical and experimental studies have suggested that tonifying kidney recipe has multiple targets, and thereby via multiple ways to accomplish antidepressant effect. The tonifying kidney recipe has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to control neurotrophic factor so as to promote the growth, differentiation, maturation of neurons. The tonifying kidney recipe participates in protection of neural plasticity, brain development, immune regulation, and a variety of other physiological processes to act as an antidepressant that has great similarity as vitamin D axis. In this article, we describe the current knowledge to introduct the relationship between kidney deficiency and vitamin D axis, and speculate about the molecular mechanism of tonifying kidney recipe in the treatment of depression by regulating vitamin D axis. |
