Popis: | This method of estimating the activity of the thyroid gland using radioactive iodine was introduced over three years ago to meet the increasing demand for a quick and reliable test, suitable for both in-patients and out-patients. At that time, various other methods were in use which required much care and time to ensure an accurate result. The urinary excretion method needs careful collection of urine over a period, either by the nursing staff or by a co-operative and intelligent patient. A fair amount of time is then required to determine the amount of excreted iodine in terms of the given dose. The measurement of protein-bound iodine in serum presents certain technical difficulties and requires a larger tracer dose than for other methods, to determine the iodine levels with accuracy. |
