Rural communities are aging faster than urban areas, but have fewer options for key primary care and long term care supports for optimal aging. This challenge requires innovative approaches to developing expertise and networks of health care providers in rural areas. This symposium brings together Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Programs (GWEP) at academic medical centers funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration to examine the current environment and opportunities for health professional training and older adult and caregiver programs in rural areas. Through the unique backdrop of their states, presenters provide examples of expanding healthcare quality, access and education into rural communities. Deana Farmer will introduce a public health framework of the rural landscape and broad factors affecting health and aging. Robin McAtee will present collaborative, grassroots strategies to engage an array of partners across Arkansas. Brittany Hay will describe a pilot project in partnership with a primary care practice in rural Florida with the goal to enhance older adults’ care. Jennifer Severance will describe the expansion and impact of evidence based programs in North Texas to support caregivers as part of the health care team. Thomas Fairchild will weave these efforts together to facilitate a shared understanding of planning and engagement strategies that can enhance access and care quality in rural areas. This symposium presents cross-sector approaches to geriatric health professional training by forging primary care and community alliances, developing engagement strategies, and evaluating programs. |
