Popis: The focus here is on some of the Victorian women scholars who very significantly but without acknowledgment advanced the study of Old English: the fierce philologist Anna Gurney, who prepared and quietly published the first translation of the Old English Chronicle materials; the widow Mary Conybeare, who assembled and developed the rest of the material in John Josias Conybeare’s highly influential volume Illustrations of Anglo-Saxon Poetry, the atelier of women who did most of the work in the many editions of W.W. Skeat (his wife, his daughters, the translators Miss Gunning and Miss Wilkinson, and even T.O. Cockayne); and Elise Otté, who provided significant philological aid to her stepfather Benjamin Thorpe in the preparation of his editions.
