Popis: | Oral microorganisms are generally considered to be responsible for the initiation of inflammatory periodontal disease, but the mechanism by which they cause bone resorption has not yet been established. We report here that the periodontopathic bacterium B. gingivalis activates mouse spleen cells to produce a factor that strongly stimulates osteoclast-mediated mineral resorption. Resorption was measured as the release of 45Ca from prelabeled fetal mouse long bones in vitro. |
