Popis: The Ohio Tests of Articulation and Perception of Sounds, OTAPS, is a clinical and research tool for assertaining speech status, planning therapy, and evaluating progress of children with misarticulations. This eight part test, evaluated for reliability and validity, was standardized on a sample of 200 children, ages 5 to 8, selected to represent an urban population. Sixty-seven sounds as produced in varying linguistic units and as represented in words, phrases, nonsense words in sentences, and nonsense words were evaluated. Perception of these 67 sounds in words was analyzed as affected by stimuli spoken by someone else and by the subject himself. Significant critical growth occured between ages 5 and 5 1 2 for all four speech subtests, between 5 1 2 and 6 for sounds in phrases and in nonsense words, and between 6 and 8 for all tests except stimulability. No significant growth took place between 7 and 8 for any speech test. The phrase test produced more inaccurate productions than the traditional word test. Significant critical differences occured between ages 5 and 7 in the growth of auditory perception for all four listening tests. How the child perceived his own articulatory productions was highly correlated with sounds produced in words or phrases.
