Popis: | The occurrence of androgenic underfunction in a group of 24 physically healthy adult schizophrenic men has been examined. There was no significant difference from a group of 10 normal men in the urinary excretion, expressed in relation to creatinine excretion, of 3α-hydroxyandrost-16-ene (androstenol), of testosterone or of epitestosterone. Measurements of physique were also made on the same subjects, and no significant difference between male schizophrenic patients and normal men was found in the androgyny score, though the mean value for the calf sex discriminant factor was significantly below normal in the schizophrenic group. A significant positive correlation coefficient was found between urinary testosterone and urinary androstenol excretion rates in both the schizophrenic group alone and the combined schizophrenic and control groups. Testosterone excretion was also correlated with calf muscle diameter in the schizophrenic group. Particular attention was paid to the possible existence of a subgroup of schizophrenic patients showing signs of androgen lack, which might be in part of a constitutional nature. |
