Popis: Forty percent to 50% of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) have esophageal symptoms during the course of disease.l-3 Infectious esophagitis, most often caused by Candida, is common in such individuals, and upper tract endoscopy with biopsy and directed cytology is usually required for complete and definitive diagnosis.4, 5 Blind esophageal brushing has been proposed as an alternative to these relatively labor-intensive, time-consuming, and expensive procedures, and studies performed using a modified obturator-tipped cytology brush,6 a sheathed cytology brush passed through a nasogastric tube,7 and a double-sheathed transnasal cytology brush.8 Cytologic brushings are superior to endoscopic biopsy in diagnosing fungal esophagitis,3, 5 and blind brushings yielded a diagnosis of esophageal candidiasis with similar success to that of endoscopic-directed cytology.5, 7, 8
