The present research project has evaluated the capability of solution combustion synthesis (SCS) for obtaining ceramic spinel-like pigments. Simultaneously, it has been analysed the influence of different combustion process variables (fuel, initial solution concentration, furnace temperature and post-synthesis thermal treatment parameters) over the final properties of the product obtained as crystalline structure, microstructure and colouring power. According to obtained results, it can be concluded that SCS method is a feasible alternative to traditional ceramic method, which allows obtaining highly spongy ceramic pigments with spinel-type structure with an intense tinting strength, without needing any additional thermal treatment. On the other hand, SCS pigments present highly desirable features for digital decoration (inkjet technology), since they don’t require intense milling processes for conditioning particle size to submicrometric range.
