Socio Economic Struggles of Small-Scale Fishers in Bangladesh

Popis: In Bangladesh, the fisheries sector directly employs about 18.5 million people and generates 3.57% of the total GDP and 25.30% of the agricultural GDP. It provides 60% of the daily animal protein intakes of Bangladeshis. The goal of this research is to understand the socioeconomic situation of the coastal SSF, to do this primary and secondary data are utilised. Primary data was collected from one coastal district. Sample size was 501 which was calculated using a conventional formula with a 95% confidence level. The research finds that, small-scale fishermen are facing serious socioeconomic issues. Average monthly income of the 42.51% respondents ranges from 6,000 to 15,000 taka. Rohingya influx caused a ban on fishing from a river and thus monthly income of 71.46% SSF fall between 6,000 and 10,000 taka. While the national average monthly income in Bangladesh is 20122 taka. Compared to socioeconomic indicators at the national level, more landless, homeless, powerless, and extremely poor persons are observed among fishers. Concerningly, 62% of women responders said they have experienced various forms of violence. This study provides evidence that SSF households require special consideration. In light of this, the study also makes some specific suggestions.
