Popis: This chapter discusses word order in Uralic languages, with the main focus on sentential constituent order. A brief assessment of the facts is also made regarding recent views on Greenbergian cross-constituent ordering generalizations. While constituent-internal order shows a great deal of uniformity across the family, variation is extensive in sentential constituent order. For example, the assumed original (S)OV order, which can be seen to be the basic order in the north-eastern area of the family, exists as an alternative in all the languages where (S)VO clearly prevails, but its discourse motivation differs across languages and constructions. The chapter draws on the more extensive overview in Vilkuna (1998), updating its results and adding information on languages not included in it, namely Ob-Ugric and most Samoyedic languages.
