Popis: The system of a jet of liquid submerged in a pool of the same liquid and directed vertically towards the two-phase interface has been studied. The conditions for the onset of entrainment of supernatant air, when the liquid involved was either water or white spirit, have been determined and a theoretical explanation for this phenomenon is shown to be in substantial agreement with the results. Mass transfer was studied with iso-amyl alcohol supernatant to water and with the transfer resistance entirely in the driving water phase, which dissolved the alcohol The onset of entrainment of alcohol drops to form an interfacial raft was again predicted with adequate accuracy and the mass transfer rate was found to increase very rapidly once such entrainment set in.
