Popis: Aquatic ecosystems are exposed to mixtures of chemicals. Can their impacts on aquatic life be diagnosed, for the more than 100,000 chemicals in commerce and accounting for the natural diversity of aquatic ecosystems and other stressors? Currently, protective chemical policies focus on a few prioritized compounds, which are thereafter promulgated into protective thresholds (e.g., water quality criteria, and ecologically protective criteria). Providing simple schemes for environmental protection and assessment, the current schemes are insufficient for comprehensive understanding of mixture impacts to aquatic ecosystems in a realistic, multiple-stress context. Recently developed eco-epidemiological methods to diagnose mixture impacts in monitoring data sets have shown the presence of a diversity of mixture effects on aquatic life. Upon diagnosis, the application of solution-focused strategies provides opportunities for improved water quality protection, assessment, and management.
