Postbiotics have recently emerged as critical effectors of probiotics’ activity and, because of their safety profile, they are considered as potential therapeutics for the treatment of vulnerable patients. Recent studies on probiotics and postbiotics are presented here in the context of novel discovery tools as organoids and organoids-based platforms, non-transformed preclinical models, that can be generated from the intestinal stem cells. The implementation of organoid related techniques is rising as the next gold standard to unravel the effect of the microbial communities on homeostasis, inflammation, idiopathic diseases, and cancer in the gut. This review summarizes recent studies on biotics performed in organoid-based models and offers our perspective on future directions. |
