Popis: A modification of the ischemic muscle technique has been developed and utilized for comparative studies of nonnarcotic analgesics and several combinations of these agents. These studies may be summarized as follows: 1. 1. Of the agents or combinations tested, acetylsalicylic acid is the most potent both in individual subjects and in the group as a whole. 2. 2. Acetophenetidine alone, while effective in some individuals, is not effective in the group, i.e., in the average individual. 3. 3. Caffeine added to a mixture of analgesic agents lessens their pain threshold-raising ability. 4. 4. A minority group of the subjects (4 of 18) studied showed some degree of just the opposite effects, i.e., a significant lowering of threshold.
