Eurological music makers and thinkers around the world are slowly coming to new terms with the age-old insight that music is not solely an aesthetic object—and that it is, rather, a complex activity that connects communities, beliefs, actions and knowledge about the world in ever-changing constellations. This happens at the same historical moment when the eurocentric mode of world domination, extraction and exploitation seems to have peaked and is assailed by self-doubt, battered by economic and climate crises which severely weaken its credibility and thus its ability to define how to live on this planet. Other voices emerge, new perspectives, hopes and models gain currency: one of them, I believe, is somehow related to the fact that all humans make music. But how can musicking around the world articulate a voice, play a role in these crises of living on a planet we continue to damage. How musical can the Anthropocene be? |
