Popis: In this chapter, the introduction sets the scene and shows how tense, aspect, and Aktionsart interact. Section 19.2 first addresses an uncontroversial aspect marker, the progressive, and the basic tense opposition in English, that between the past and the non-past. It is then explained why the perfect and the conditional in English are at the interface of tense and aspect, and, tense, modality, and mood, respectively. The question whether there is a future tense in English is also addressed. Further to the presentation of tense and aspect as morphological markers, a number of ways in which they affect the sentence and larger texts are also discussed. Section 19.3 offers a more detailed analysis of Aktionsart: the main situation types are defined, the ways Aktionsart impacts on the perception of time movement are discussed, and it is shown how the notion of coercion has been used to explain the dynamics.
