The footwear industry is closely related to adhesives as footwear manufacturing involves transformation and assembly of various components made up of several materials where different adhesives play a key role. The proper choice of adhesive is crucial to ensure the bond strength required. Moreover, the large variety of materials used in the footwear industry require specially formulated adhesives. The present review gives an overview of the substrates used as footwear materials and discusses the adhesives most commonly used in the footwear manufacturing process. Surface treatments used prior to bonding process are also reviewed, highlighting their importance. Footwear adhesives requirements are also reviewed in this paper where the joining of the upper to the sole is the most demanding process in terms of peel resistance. Future trends in footwear adhesives will be related to the use of more sustainable adhesives. From this perspective, water-based and hot-melt adhesives are also included in this paper. |
