Popis: Bacterial meningitis is generally a devastating infection of the leptomeninges and underlying subarachnoid cerebrospinal fluid with a high mortality rate, particularly in the perinatal and neonatal infant. This is more worrisome because despite the more available potent antimicrobials and variably effective vaccines, the disease remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Mortality rates could be as high as between 25 50% depending on which series as well as the area of practice, whilst morbidity, often neurologic, could be as elevated as 25 – 45%.
