Popis: | Seventy-five patients with diffuse interstitial lung disease have had lung biopsies by the high speed rotating trephine method. The yield of lung tissue was 45 percent in the first 20 patients while learning the details of performing this procedure adequately. Once proficiency was achieved, the yield was 89 percent in the last 44 cases. Complications have included pneumothoraces requiring catheter drainage in 39 percent of our cases, minimal hemoptysis in 7 percent of the cases and one death from massive hemoptysis. This report amplifies the technical aspects of the procedure in order to avoid problems. With experience this procedure can provide lung tissue for diagnosis in 90 percent of instances, is safe and easily performed, with minimal risk and discomfort to the patient. |
