Popis: | 1. 1. A review was made of eighteen cases of congenital tracheoesophageal fistula from the records of the Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles. 2. 2. The radiographic and endoscopic means of making a positive clinical diagnosis are described and suggestions made for improving these technics. 3. 3. The level of the fistula was determined in these eighteen cases and in all other cases reported in the English medical literature. The fistulas most commonly occur at the level of the seventh cervical and first thoracic vertebrae. Most of the fistulas can be more easily repaired via a left cervical incision. 4. 4. The left cervical approach is described and illustrated. Its advantages are stressed and the means of avoiding complications discussed. In particular the means of avoiding injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve is outlined. |
