Popis: | In recent years, the Internet has become an important medium for promoting, distributing and retailing both ‘traditional’ and new drugs. This chapter discusses how the concept of using violence is transformed on darknet marketplaces that offer the technological infrastructure to buyers and sellers to process a drug transaction anonymously. By using a qualitative approach, the analysis focuses on alternative mechanisms regarding the use of violence as a means for settling disputes and for resolving conflicts. On cryptomarkets, the question of quality, quantity, shipping and payment of a product, which is potentially a source of conflict, needs to be addressed alternatively, because contact in person is not feasible. Instead, (1) a third party conflict resolution mechanism (centralised escrow), (2) paying prior to delivering the product (finalise early) and (3) the agreement of two out of three parties on releasing the payment (multi-signature escrow) constitute alternative mechanisms to the concept of violence as it has been described for conventional drug markets. Furthermore, face-to-face interactions are substituted with (4) the interplay of vendors, customers and market administrators using an elaborated feedback system, and (5) information discussed on various forums addressing a vendor’s trustworthiness, quality of a product, shipping, communication, and stealth. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/ |
