Popis: | Between October 1989 and June 1990 765 out of 1412 sera from intravenous drug users (IVDU) from Manipur a northeastern state in India bordering on Burma were found positive for HIV. The subjects were selected non-consecutively from drug addiction treatment centers jails and the general population. 98.7% were male. 70% were 20-29 years of age. Previously the population had been screened since July 1986 without finding any positive sera. It is estimated that there are about 15000 IVDUs in the states population of 1.8 million of whom 7500 are HIV positive. The source of HIV infection is presumed to be international heroin traffickers from Burma. |
