Popis:	The recruitment, attrition, retention, and replacement of residents are subjects of vital interest in general surgery education. This article reviews reported series of attrition in general surgery and compares patterns of resident withdrawal from training in general surgery and other disciplines. Recruitment, characteristics, and success of residents who replaced those who left through attrition are reviewed.
