Popis: Shortness of stature is a symptom, not a disease. In recent years the ability to assay HGH and similar substances has led to the ability to classify more precisely the disease entity behind the symptoms. Dwarfs are either proportionate or disproportionate and the condition may be heritable or acquired. Thirty-five females whose heights are less than 4 feet, 10 inches have been reviewed. All had a normal menarche. Menstrual irregularities and fibroids were frequent. Of the 20 who were married, 11 had conceived. Early abortion and stillbirth were increased. Early delivery was predicted in some instances on increasing maternal respiratory distress. Cesarean section was performed for delivery in all cases of disproportionate dwarfism. Birth weights in all instances approach those of normal infants for that period of gestation when delivery took place. Formerly prevented from reproduction, today's dwarfs are extremely conscious of sexual inadequacy based upon their individual skeletal abnormalities. Psychosexual counseling has become an integral part of the genetic counseling given to these individuals.
