The present dissertation mainly consists of the translation of a Chinese Buddhist text dating from the 8th century, Tankuang's Commentary on the Awakening of Faith. Written around 761, it is a very detailed commentary, in which Tankuang, a Chinese scholar-monk, compares the two versions of the Awakening of Faith, ascribed to Paramārtha and to Śikṣānanda, but also discusses the previous commentaries made on the Awakening of Faith as well as some related sūtras, especially the new translations carried out in China at the very beginning of the 8th century. Through the textual analysis of Tankuang's commentary, this research examines to what extent Tankuang was trying to reconcile the Yogācāra/Faxiang conceptions of his time with the interpretations established by other Buddhist commentators such as Wonhyo (617-686) and Fazang (643-712). While Tankuang is mainly relying on Fazang’s commentary, he is also adding some new interpretations coming from the Faxiang current. |
