Popis: An enzymic glycerol assay in which glycerol kinase is coupled to an ADP-detecting system has been modified to increase its range (0.008–0.150 μmoles) and reduce the amounts of reagents required. The modified assay was used to assay glyceraldehyde and dihydroxyacetone following their quantitative reduction to glycerol with sodium borohydride. Mixtures of glycerol with either one of the trioses are differentiated by this method provided that the triose-to-glycerol ratio does not exceed about 3:1. The application of this assay method to a yeast strain growing on these substrates is shown.
