Popis: | That the electrocardiogram in hypertension often shows changes similar to those which are found in coronary heart disease when there is no clinical or postmortem evidence of the latter was demonstrated ten years ago by Rykert and Hepburn. 1 These changes have since then been shown to be the earliest that occur in the heart in hypertensive heart disease. 2 The electrocardiogram is therefore the most important index of the evolution of the effect of hypertension on the heart. During the past few years we have become interested in the changes in the electrocardiogram frequently encountered in diastolic hypertensive patients after reduction of blood pressure by lumbodorsal sympathectomy. Smithwick's series of such cases has provided ample opportunity for us to analyze the electrocardiograms of a significant number of patients and to compare preoperative, approximately two weeks postoperative and one year or longer postoperative tracings.
