Popis: | This article presents formally the functional and geographical diversity of the linguistic categories of Polish inhabitants’ names, focusing on the top three suffixes: -ak, -an and -anin. The first part discusses the criteria of suffix distribution, their functional diversity, origin, as well as their formal and semantic development in Polish. The second part is devoted to the old-fashioned and modern formal diversity of inhabitants’ names in Polish dialects. There is also a division of Polish language areas into the northern, central and western part with the suffix -ak, and the southern and eastern part (nowadays only southern and eastern borderland) with the suffix -anin. The last part describes locally conditioned pragmatic characteristics of the suffix -ak, and the attitude in Polish local dialects of the linguistic category of inhabitants’ names to collective neighbors’ nicknames. |
