Popis: | The chemical and biological nature of alkaloids of ergoty bajra, ergoty wheat, and ergoty rye was investigated. The alkaloid present in ergoty rye and wheat was mainly ergotamine, whereas the alkaloids present in ergoty bajra were mainly agroclavine and elymoclavine. Unlike the alkaloids of ergoty rye and ergoty wheat, the alkaloids of ergoty bajra did not respond in the cock's comb test, and on acid hydrolysis did not show any amino acid residues. The alkaloids from all three sources, when injected into chicks, produced drooping of the wings and weakness of the legs. |
