Popis: | SUMMARY Utilizing NAA, NAA/Cr, NAA/Cho, and NAA/ (Cr + Cho) ratios as parameters, the majority of patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy may be correctly lateralized with 1H MR spectroscopy. Cr, Cho, and Cr/Cho ratios yield variable and unreliable results. Additional markers that may be elevated in these patients include lactate and amino acid neurotransmitters. Phosphorus MR spectroscopy, although cumbersome to perform, may yield additional information, including alterations in PME, POE, Pi, ATP, and pH levels. MR spectroscopy may be a helpful, reliable, noninvasive test with which to lateralize the seizure focus in patients with partial complex seizures. MR spectroscopy is complementary to other studies, especially MR imaging, and both may be performed in a single integrated examination and result in improved surgical management and outcome. |
