Popis: | The effects of bilateral adrenalectomy and/or unilateral ovariectomy on ovulation and follicular development were studied in female rats. Th e animals were allowed to either cycle for 1 estrous sycle before being killed or to cycle for 30 days before sacrifice. Adrenalectomized rats killed at the 1st metestrus after the operation ovulated fewer eggs per ovary than controls. Adrenalectomized/ovariectomized rats showed compensatory ovulation as did ovariectomized rats. Animals killed after 30 days showed similar results. The number of follicles larger than 295 mcm were not affected by adrenalectomy but those larger than 448 mcm were reduced in number. However both adrenalectomized/ovariect omized and ovariectomized rats had significantly (p less than .01) higher numbers of follicles larger than 295 mcm and 448 mcm. The results indicate that adrenalectomy reduces the number of eggs ovulated but does not influence compensatory ovulation in unilaterally ovariectomized rats. |
