In order to understand modern approaches to the study of the link between profession and education it is vital to turn to the works of the founders and classics of the science of sociology. Max Weber, for example, was one of the first to draw attention to the necessity of looking at profession and education as criteria of social status. "What we will mean by the term 'social status,' " he wrote, "are actual claims on positive or negative privileges in regard to social prestige, if it is based on one or more of the following criteria: (a) way of life; (b) a formal education that consists of practical training and the assimilation of the corresponding way of life; and (c) the prestige of birth or profession" [1]. |
