Popis: | Multilocular cystic hydronephrosis is one of the more common causes of an abdominal mass in the infant and young child. It is thought to be the result of congenital stricture of the ureteropelvic junction. Intravenous urography is one of the first diagnostic procedures, and probably the most important, for abdominal masses in this age group. Because of the duration of the pathological process, the intravenous urogram is frequently interpreted merely as showing a large mass with nonfunction of the kidney on the involved side. We have found that it is often possible to make a positive diagnosis of multilocular cystic hydronephrosis by this means. This is done by the demonstration of a nephrogram produced by the thin margin of functioning renal parenchyma outlining the hydronephrotic kidney.
