Status of Rural Women in Agricultural Society: A Case Study on Purba Banasgaon Kismat Village of Phansidewa Block of Darjeeling District, West Bengal, IndiaStatus

Popis: India is a developing country. In most of the developing countries agriculture is one of the main occupations, the Indian the scenario is more or less similar. As per the FAO report 2017-2018 agriculture and is allied source is the largest source of livelihood in India. In India about 70 percent of rural population is still depended on the agriculture among them a large number of populations is women. About 82 percent of the farmers are small or marginal farmer although India is the largest producer of Milk, Jute, pulses in the world and 2nd largest producer of rice, wheat, sugarcane, cotton and groundnuts. According to 68th round of National Sample Survey in 2013 indicate that in rural area 59 per cent men and 75 per cent women are engagedin agriculture. Women play an important role in agriculture but still they are lag behind in achieving job and wage in comparison to men. So, the present study has been attempting to make understand the gender inequality, socio economic condition and decision-making process in an agricultural society of Purba-Banasgaon-Kismat village of Phansidewa Block of Darjeeling. The study is based on primary and secondary data. Women are interviewed randomly of the village by scheduled questionnaire and observation method. The collecetd data has been represented by using descriptive frequency (with weighted in percentage) table constructed in M.S. excel, 2007. Regression analysis has been done to show the relationship between education and composite average score of decision making status of the surveyed women in Purba-Banasgaon-Kismat village. Most of the surveyed women belongs to schedule caste category and most of them are illiterate. Almost half of the women households cum agricultural worker. The decision making capabilities of the surveyed women is not quite good, but the result showed education play a key role in their decision making capabilities.
