Popis: Amniotic fluid levels of alpha fetoprotein (AFP) were compared in normal pregnancies at varying gestational ages with pregnancies associated with anencephaly. AFP was measured in amniotic fluid from 93 patients with normal uncomplciated pregnancies in 10 patients with an anencephalic fetus and in 2 patients who had previously had an anencephalic fetus but who in the present pregnancy delivered a normal infant. Results clearly showed that mean AFP level decreased with increasing gestational age from 21 mcg at 12-16 weeks to 1 mcg/m at 32-36 weeks. The statistical differences between means indicated that the fall in AFP was significant between the following gestational groups: 12-16 weeks and 17-21 weeks (P < .001); 17-21 and 22-26 weeks (P < .001); 22-26 and 27-31 weeks (P < .025); and 27-31 and 32-36 weeks (P < .001). When grouped according to gestational age the differences between AFP levels of anencephalic and normal pregnancies was highly significant (P < .001). There was a decrease in amniotic fluid AFP with gestation between the 2 anencephalic groups ie. grouped and individual (P < .001). The 2 patients with previously anencephalic deliveries but with normal deliveries in this study had AFP levels associated with normal pregnancies.
